Description

Observed on 28 April 2022 at the Texas Star Party with a 22” Obsession UC Dobsonian. NGC 2419 appears as a faint irregularly shaped cloud that does not concentrate towards the center. From the DSS image it appears I was only observing the core.

NGC 2419 is the 5th most distant GC. It bears the nickname "the Intergalactic Wanderer," which was bestowed when it was erroneously thought not to be in orbit around the Milky Way. Its orbit takes it further away from the galactic center than the Magellanic Clouds. At this great distance it takes three billion years to make one trip around the galaxy.

Shapley Sawyer Classification: VII
Distance: 274,660 LY
Type: Far Halo Globular
Position w.r.t. core of galaxy: Above and on sun side of the core.
Any stars resolved: No
Undergoing Core Collapse: No
